*My friends have said, "You seem to be from the forest."
mori girl had already been spotted on the streets of harajuku by this time, but choco’s loose list gave way to so many new members of the style. the list helped give people a general idea of what mori was and wasn’t, though the list wasn’t meant to be followed like guidelines. several substyles appeared as well, including hama/umi kei (ocean style) & yama kei (mountain style) which i think are both adorable and want to include some old blogs for here and here but while im at it i want to include a few more blogs/blog posts i found to be adorable like this and this as well as a cute coord post for yama kei that i reblogged as inspiration for my own layering. but this all leads me to my personal favorite mori substyle, DARK MORI!!!! i’ve spent hours sifting through old dark mori blogs from around 2009-2014 (ill include a few of my favorites at the end of this by the way) and i’ve just fallen in love over the past year. dark mori is comparable to strega, but is more of an offshoot rather than the style itself. i find myself drawn to a mixture of both more traditional dark mori as well as the more witchy strega. theres a lot i could say about strega itself, but i’ll save that for its own blog post. as for dark mori, it also has a checklist of loose rules and such similar to the ones choco made on the mixi. these rules were made by tumblr user “strega’s forest” on a now defunct blog, but another tumblr user known as shortcuttothestars or mai magi was also a major pioneer of this style. dark mori never took off as much in japan, but it cultivated a very strong following in the western world in the early to mid 2010s. tumblr was the most popular location for those who dressed the style, but stand alone blogs (such as my own) also existed and were also popular. i’ll include the dark mori checklist below:
*Wants to look like a witch or a dark fairy from the woods.
*Likes to wear dark, dusty colors, but also jewel and earthy tones.
*All white outfits can be pretty for a ghostly look.
*Vintage clothes are a must.
*Antique, used, or ragged laces and silks.
*Flowers, leaves, feathers, or antlers make pretty headpieces.
*Natural stones, bones, taxidermy and silver jewelry is best.
*Leather accessories (belts, pouches, cuffs, corsets…)
*Anything fur related could work.
*Knitted items are good, and handmade is best.
*Layering is the key.
*Medieval, Victorian, Folklore and 1920’s inspirations.
*Ethnic clothes.
*Hats are big, quirky and always decorated.
*Floral patterns and animal prints.
*Might have some Lolita or Steampunk inspiration
*Helena Bonham Carter is a great style icon.
*Dramatic silent movie makeup, tribal paints or very natural looks works fine.
*Legwarmers are fun to experiment with. Wearing stripey socks can be used to create a witchy look.
*Can look flirtatious and seductive at times. Corsets are welcome for this look.
*Crushed velvet.
*Prefers dresses and skirts, the longer the better.
*Shawls, ponchos, and hoods.
*Laced up boots, pointy shoes, victorian heels, and clogs.
*Braided hair, messy curls, or dreads are good hairstyles.

*Folklore, fairytales, legends, and myths from the North are favorites but might like Oriental cultures as well.
*Loves antiques.
*Thrifting is a favorite activity.
*Always thinks "warm and cozy."

*Preraphaelites, Arthur Rackham, William Bouguereau or Brian Froud are favorite artists.
*Sort of like Mori Kei x Antique Kei x Gothic x Naturalist Kei x Curio…
i love how random all the little lifestyle things are like… why must i drink my spiced wine out of horn or pretty flask? but i do appreciate the recognition for all the strange and esoteric girls out there. truly the moment. since this is more of me just talking about the styles rather than educating, i’ll include those dark mori blogs i mentioned before here and here annddd here!!! abandoned 2010s fashion blogs really are my favorite piece of media… obviously.
to close this off, i don’t have any of my own personal coords or pictures to show yet but here’s some of my own personal inspiration i’ve sourced from pinterest, ill try to include the original posters if i can figure it out but a lot of these pictures were saved wayyy earlier, and i couldnt track down the originals:
